Tapping the Admiral

Origin of the name

Tapping the Admiral.com is named after the story that Royal Navy sailors "tapped" the barrel of brandy preserving the body of Admiral Lord Nelson during the voyage home from the successful Battle of Trafalgar on 21st October 1805, during which the Admiral had been fatally shot by a French sniper.

Having being repeatedly tapped by sailors during the voyage it is said that the barrel was, in fact, empty by the time HMS Victory reached London. The affection of British sailors for their grog was legendary but to be prepared to sup brandy that was preserving a body! No wonder the Royal Navy commanded the world's seas for nearly two centuries with men of that constitution.

So in honour of those hardy sailors and their search for drink and in keeping with the great British tradition of naming pubs after historical events, characters and battles we are proud to name our new UK pub guide after their habit of "tapping the admiral". Welcome and enjoy!

Our principles and methodology

This website is professionally run with an editor in charge of publishing reviews, submissions and comments in order to ensure a pleasurable experience for the visitor and to avoid the silly submissions that ruin so many pub websites that allow unsupervised additions and reviews which are often unfair, biased, self-serving or obscene and where many reviews are clearly driven by malice.
